Flower Languages, You Better Know Them
Love, greetings, celebration, and remembrance. All these feelings cannot be fully expressed through words. Actually, no emotion can be verbalized no matter how desperate we want to express our feelings to others. Flowers are ubiquitous especially in places where we have to bless, celebrate or commemorate by expressing our emotions more clearly. Wedding halls, funerals, or schools(for graduation, teacher’s day, etc) would be common places for us to see the flowers. Also, in these specific places we can find out different types of flowers because each flower represents different emotions. What would be some flowers that we frequently see? Some flowers are used in different situations because of their distinctive flower language. Let’s see the flowers we use the most: roses, lilies, carnations, and ranunculus.
Roses are the flowers that we can find in our lives most frequently . We see them in weddings, we see them when a boyfriend gives it as a gift to his girlfriend, or we even see it them as birthday presents. Roses are well known for having romantic flower language, so we usually give roses to people whom we love. However, the flower languages of roses differ depending on their colors. Red roses, which symbolize love and romance,are appropriate to give for your loved ones. White roses indicate innocence love and purity so that they are usually used in wedding bouquets. Pink or champagne represents enthusiasm and fascination. Yellow roses indicates the emotion of happiness and orange means desire, passion, and excitement. There are also flower languages for the colors of roses that are artificially made. Blue roses mean precious or eternal love and inspiration. And as purple roses symbolize enchantment and intense desire, people give them to their love at first sight.
The colors of lilies aren’t as various as . However, although some colors are the same as roses, they have different meanings. Of course we see lilies at wedding halls or in other occasions. But we can see lilies mostly during funerals. There are mainly five colors of lilies: white, red, orange, yellow, and pink. The white lily symbolizes purity and virtue. We see them a lot in funerals. Red ones symbolize passion and orange indicates confidence, pride, and wealth. Yellow lilies mean thankfulness and enjoyment. Lastly pink lilies symbolize abundance and prosperity. But lilies are commonly known as devotion or purity and the colors except for white are not familiar with us.
We can see and purchase carnations easily in Korea, especially when it becomes May when there are Teachers’ Day and Parents’ Day. A lot of people buy carnations to express their feelings of gratitude through carnations on these specific days so there are lots of them out on the streets, convenient stores, or even in cosmetic brand shops too! Carnations’ meanings also depend on their colors. The general symbol of carnations is pride and beauty. However, red carnations symbolize love, pride, and admiration that we consider it as meaningful to give them as gifts to our teachers or parents. The pink carnation represents love from a woman or a mother and white carnations indicate innocence and pure love. By overlooking at the meanings of these carnations you understand why people use carnations in May for their parents and/or teachers.
The last flower that we are going to discuss about is ranunculus. Some of you may not be familiar with this flower. However, they are frequently used during weddings. Besides the purpose of wedding bouquets, ranunculus are ubiquitous at springs in flower shops. People buy and grow ranunculus, the small camellia-like flower. There are several colors for ranunculus and they have quite similar meanings depending on similar colors. Orange and yellow ranunculus symbolizes happiness and positive energy. People give ranunculus as gifts to their family members or decorate their homes with them. Red ranunculus has same meaning as red roses. They mean love, passion, and romance. The pink ones have similar meanings as the red ranunculus. They indicate romance, love, and gentle feelings. Last, the purple ranunculus stand for mystery, royalty, and beauty. Mostly, people give purple ranunculus who are special in their life.
Most of the flowers that we covered in this article are not the only choices that you can choose from to give as a gift to others or use in special occasions(graduation, wedding, etc.) Thousands of flowers exist in this world and a lot of them have positive meanings. Still, there are flowers with negative languages. When you are considering to give a flower as a gift to someone else, it would be nice to figure out the meaning of the flower and give them to your loved ones as a gift!
